What is Hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing is logical, gentle and profound. It has grown so quickly because, ten years ago, a few brave mothers did the course and it worked so well that they told all their friends. In the intervening ten years, it has grown exponentially and is now a well-known, accepted and effective form of antenatal preparation.
The word ‘hypno’ does us a disservice. It gives the impression of tree-hugging hippies sitting cross-legged on beanbags changing. Nothing could be further from the truth.
You already have the perfect system of giving birth created in your body. The trouble is we have loaded fear and negative pre-conceptions on top of this system which prevent it from working properly. Hypnobirthing helps you release the fears and gives you the tool so that your body can give birth efficiently and comfortably in the way it is designed to do.
The combination of easy to learn methods of breathing and deep relaxation and visualisation, combined with positive thought and language, reduce stress, fatigue, anxiety and fear and, as a result reduce pain. Releasing fear is fundamental to the success of Hypnbirthing.
Hypnobirthing acknowledges the importance of the father’s role and gives him a specific role which brings the couple closer together and gives him the knowledge that he was an important part of how his baby entered the world, thus deepening his relationship with his child.
You will be given the information you need to understand how the body is working during labour and the choices that are available to you, so you are equipped to work you’re your medical advisers to achieve the birth you want, which can often be more comfortable, drug free, calm and gentle.

What is the outcome of doing a Hypnobirthing course?
With Hypnobirthing you learn the techniques to facilitate your body’s production of the pain-relieving hormone endorphins, and also oxytocin which has been described as the hormone of calm and which stimulates the muscles of the uterus to work in labour. The result of this is that labour is more efficient, shorter and more comfortable in very many cases.
The important thing is that Hypnobirthing works!
Who should do Hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing can help everyone. Even if a birth does not go to plan, hypnobirthing helps you remain calm and to make the right decisions for you and for your baby.
Mothers come to Hypnobirthing for a more calm and comfortable birth, and tis ability to deliver this is why it has become so popular so quickly. But if birth is calm and comfortable and drug free for the mother, it is also calm and comfortable and drug free for the baby, giving him or her the very best start in life.
The Hypnobirthing Association has been set up to establish and support ethical standards in Hypnobirthing teaching.
Membership of the association is open to all fully qualified Hypnobirthing teachers, who subscribe to the principles and ethics as described in the Association's aims.

Membership of The Hypnobirthing Association is open to all fully trained HypnoBirthing teachers, from whichever training course. The purpose is that The Hypnobirthing Association is the professional body for all HypnoBirthing teachers where couples can find top quality HypnoBirthing courses and Hypnobirthing teachers can exchange ideas to enhance their practice.
