A positive experience with a happy ending

“We thought that you would like to know that we had a beautiful baby girl 2 weeks ago!  She decided to arrive on her due date (can you believe it!) on the 12 February at 10.15am. We had a very good labour and she was born naturally at Kingston Hospital without the need for anything more than gas and air and the amazing support of my husband, without whom there is no way I would have had the strength and belief to get through without pain relief.

I had some "twinges" at around 11pm on the Thursday evening and by about 2am was pretty sure that our baby was on its way. We went to the hospital at about 4.30am with contractions being about 5 minutes apart.  The hypnobirthing relaxation and visualisation definitely helped through this stage of the labour and I felt relaxed, positive and excited that our baby was on its way.  The midwife at the hospital was very good at leaving us to ourselves but at the handover around 7am I felt the need to be examined to have an idea of my progress.  I was quite disappointed to have only got to 3cm at this stage and psychologically the dawn of the new day (as well as the fact that our first daughter had been born at 6.45am) was playing on my mind.
It was at the point that I was starting to doubt my strength to see the labour through without pain relief.  I felt that the "slow" progress was an indication that there could still be many hours to come and that I was struggling to stay focused. My husband was amazing and literally talked me through each contraction until our baby was born. We agreed at about 9.30am to have the midwife break my waters as I was tiring and needed to feel that we were doing something that would progress the labour.  Inevitably, this led to quite a fast progression to the down stage - and once we reached this stage it was only 10 minutes to our daughter being born.  I have absolutely no doubt that the hypnobirthing really helped me with this stage.  I think I had dealt with my fears and inhibitions about this stage of labour (it having taken many hours for this stage with our first baby) and let my body do what it felt it needed to.  I also managed to give birth to a 8lb12oz baby without the need for any stitches (!), I am sure, down to breathing the baby out rather than aggressively pushing.

We were left for well over an hour alone with our baby after she was born before anyone came weigh her or anything else.  She feed within 15 minutes and I have had an excellent recovery in the weeks following.  She is doing brilliantly, she is healthy and calm and we couldn't be happier!  Thank you for all of your help in this having been a positive experience with a happy ending.”
