Announcement! Study Day Dates For Your Diary

Hypnobirthing Association Study DayThe Study Day in London with Michel Odent was an outstanding success, but we were so fascinated listening to Michel that there was no time for discussion between ourselves about hypnobirthing. It was the same when Sarah Buckley spoke to us last September and with Sheila Kitzinger the previous April.

This time we intend to have time for discussion and learning about our hypnobirthing practice as well as hearing top speakers.

The dates of the Sharing days are:

York                15th November 2014        To find out more ‘click here’ to book 'click here'

London          25th October 2014            To find out more ‘click here’ to book 'click here'

York Sharing Day – 15th November 2014

We are very excited to be holding our first Sharing Day in the north on 15th November.  We now have very active and enthusiastic teachers in the north, and we want to support you.  Hence the Sharing Day.

We are still finalising our main speaker, and we’ve heard so many wonderfully knowledgeable and entertaining speakers at various conferences during the year that it’s difficult to decide who to ask.  We have a list of possible speakers long enough for many Sharing Days to come, all of them excellent, but we’re waiting for a reply from the speaker we have invited at the moment.  We’ll let you know as soon as we hear, but it will be someone who is well worth listening to.  Watch this space.

We’ve had several suggestions about subjects that people would like to learn more about or discuss with other hypnobirthing teachers.  If you have any suggestions on this, let us know and we’ll add them to the list.  We want this part of the day to be really useful to you so your input is valued.

We are inviting too a contribution from an experienced midwife.  We are always hugely impressed by the knowledge of midwives, and it is a wonderful opportunity to learn from someone with that depth of experience.

We also propose to show part of the DVD that we recorded when Sarah Buckley spoke to us in London last September.  The whole of Sarah’s talk was fascinating and packed with information, but the part she did especially for us and which, I believe, is not generally available on her DVD, is the section we specially asked for on ultrasound safety.  This is the part we will be showing in York, and I know you will find it very informative and thought provoking.

Lunch and refreshments are included in the fee.  Sometimes we feel that talking with our fellow teachers over lunch and exchanging ideas and experiences is one of the most important parts of the day.

We are sure the Sharing Day will be a huge success and look forward to seeing you there .

The Sharing Day will be held at The Friargate Quaker Centre, Friargate, York, YO1 9RL

Time: 10am – 5pm

The Friargate Quaker Centre has a lovely peaceful atmosphere and a garden that we can wander out into as we have out lunch.

York has an excellent train service from the north and from the south.   It is a mediaeval city which didn’t take into consideration car parking in its design, but there are extensive car parks just outside the city walls and the whole city is within easy walking distance.

Why not book a weekend break in York so you can enjoy this beautiful city at the same time as refreshing your hypnobirthing teaching at the Sharing Day -  www.visityork.org

We have kept the fee to the absolute minimum to cover our expenses so that it is easy for you to come.  Fee, including lunch and refreshments - £57.

London Sharing Day – 25th October 2014

We’ve had some wonderful Study Days in London but this one is designed to have discussion time as well as learning time. We are sure you’ll enjoy it.

The Sharing Day will be held at:

The Abbey Conference Centre, 34 Great Smith Street, Westminster, London SW1P3BU

Time: 10am – 5pm

This is extremely central and easily accessed from Victoria or Waterloo mainline stations and St James’s Park and Westminster underground stations.

Why not book for a weekend, it couldn’t be closer to lots of the sites, so you can enjoy a break at the same time as refreshing your hypnobirthing teaching at the Sharing Day. You can see where it is on www.theabbeycentre.org.uk

We have kept the fee to the absolute minimum to cover our expenses so that it is easy for you to come.  Fee, including lunch and refreshments - £63.

Mama Conference (cont)

One of the highlights of the first day was a wonderfully entertaining talk by Mary Nolan, Professor of Perinatal Education at the University of Worcester on The Politics of Difficult Choices – all the dilemmas that face midwives and also us as HypnoBirthing teachers.

We also had a presentation from Toni Harman about her new film, Microbirth. If you get the chance to see this film, grasp it with both hands. It is hugely significant, and you’ll be glad you did.

On the second day there were so many wonderful speakers that it was difficult to decide what to do. Michel Odent was his wonderful charming self and the room was crammed for his talk. Everyone hoped that Soo Downe would announce the results of the SHIP trial, but we’re still waiting for that. Nevertheless her talk on ‘Is Hypnobirthing Effective?’ was fascinating, highlighting the difficulty of research into such a complex area.

The keynote speaker was Ina May Gaskin. Her knowledge and experience, as ever, is second to none.

There was great interest in the KG Hypnobirthing stand, so we worked hard to promote you as KG Hypnobirthing teachers.

If you are able, go to the Mama Conference next year. It’s well worth a visit.

Teaching Tips

Tell them what you’re going to tell them:

If you don’t tell them what you’re going to say, they’re probably wondering what you’re driving at, and missing half the content. If you give them a very brief overview first, it helps them to feel comfortable about what you’re saying.

Tell them:

Now you’ve introduced what you’re going to say, and they feel comfortable, then they are free to listen to what you have to tell them.

Tell them what you told them:

Nobody can take in absolutely everything you say. A brief recap will remind them so they go away remembering the wisdom you imparted.

It’s a simple formula. It’s a classic formula. And it works!

So make use of it in your teaching.
